The Humane Society of Beaufort County helps local people care for cats and dogs through spay and neuter assistance, practical education, and prevention-focused community support.
BCHS is separate from the Beaufort County Animal Shelter. Its role centers on helping make preventive care more accessible and encouraging responsible pet ownership across Beaufort County.
OUR PURPOSE
Prevention that supports animals and the people who care for them
Pet overpopulation is a community challenge with consequences for animals, families, and local services. BCHS addresses that challenge at its source by helping residents access spay and neuter resources and by sharing information that supports responsible care.
This prevention-first approach helps reduce unintended litters and gives more Beaufort County pet owners and community caregivers a practical way to act before animals enter an already strained shelter system.
WHY THE WORK MATTERS
Accessible care can change the course of an animal’s life
When cost or access puts spay and neuter services out of reach, a single unplanned litter can quickly become a much larger problem. Prevention protects the well-being of individual pets while easing pressure on families, community caregivers, and the county shelter.

A DISTINCT LOCAL ROLE
Assistance and prevention, not shelter operations
BCHS and the Beaufort County Animal Shelter are separate organizations with different responsibilities. Animal Control Officers enforce laws that protect animals, while BCHS concentrates on education, assistance, spay and neuter support, and helping the shelter when it can.
That distinction matters. It helps residents contact the right organization while showing how prevention programs complement the work of local animal services.
